What basic information do I need when toy-shopping?

Toy Shopping

When choosing the right toy for a child, you must think about the safety issues. Pay attention to the design and construction in all toys for all ages. Read the directions or instructions and make sure they are clear to the child.

Here are some general guidelines you should keep in mind:

  • toys made of fabric should carry either "flame resistant" or "flame retardant" inscriptions on the label
  • art materials should be labeled as "nontoxic"
  • crayons and paints should have "ASTM D-4236" on the label, meaning that they've been evaluated by the American Society for Testing and Materials.
  • choose washable stuffed toys
  • painted toys should use only lead-free paint
